Steam ‘n’ Dry Pest Control Auckland Services have provided weevil control throughout West Auckland, North Shore, Eastern Bays, South Auckland and Hibiscus Coast for over 36 years. Moreover, a weevil is a small beetle that destroys growing plants and stored grains. There are over 40,000 identified species of weevils. The mouthparts of a typical weevil are shaped into a long snout. It comes with an antenna on both sides. In several species, the nose is longer when compared to the body, which rarely develops to one-half inch (13 mm) long.
Weevils are nasty beetles for gardening and farming. Hence, weevil inflicts damage by eating plants. At least one kind of weevil enjoys eating nearly every grain, fruit, or vegetable. At the same time, it’s essential to recognise some key insect pests in agriculture. The boll weevil is the primary threat to cotton crops, while the alfalfa weevil can harm alfalfa. Plum curculio concerns apples, cherries, peaches, and plums; the acorn weevil targets acorns. Moreover, rice weevils and grain weevils can infest stored grains, where they lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae consume the grains from the inside out.
A weevil’s snout is curved downwards so it can bore into plants. The weevil’s mouthparts at the tip of the long nose munch fruits, seeds, and other plant parts. Different species of weevils have unusual types of snout forms. For instance, the female nut weevil snout is usually longer than its body. It requires a long nose to bore through the nut’s hard shell to lay its eggs inside.
The two most popular pantry weevils are granary weevil and rice weevil. These tiny kitchen pests are beetles that seldom grow bigger than ¼ inch. Female weevils use their small snouts to drill holes in the casings of grains like barley, beans, corn, oats, rice, rye, and various seeds. Because of this, it can be hard to identify an infestation. It is sluggish to begin, and the larvae are hiding. The moment grain or rice weevils present themselves, that becomes a problem.
Just one female can lay as many as 400 eggs, meaning 400 more hungry bugs hunting for food and if you have encountered something like this, learning how to control and eliminate weevils is essential.
Remove all contaminated foods. Examine throughout the kitchen, including every cabinet, for any food items that may be contaminated. If you find something you are not sure of, discard it. There is no reason for jeopardising reinfestation. It could empty your pockets over time. After collecting them, immediately take them outside the garbage container and transfer the can as far off your house as possible.
Perform the most thorough cleaning of your kitchen and cabinets that you have ever achieved. Begin with taking anything completely off the shelves and vacuum-cleaning them. Also, ensure you get all the cracks in which flour or other food bits could hide. If you have contact paper lining the shelves, take it off. Then, work with a rag and hot, sudsy water to complete all those other cleanings.

Destroy weevils using cold. You must freeze your food to protect yourself from future difficulties with weevils. Freeze cookies, cornmeal, flour, grits, oats, or anything else. If you have room in your freezer, you should maintain the stuff full-time. If you have a small freezer and can’t afford the space, set the fridge as cold as possible and leave the food in no less than four days. That will destroy any eggs, larvae, or weevils. Thus, call Steam n Dry Pest Control Auckland Services, providing weevil elimination throughout West Auckland, North Shore, Eastern Bays, South Auckland and Hibiscus Coast.
Destroy weevils using heat. If you do not feel like freezing everything, a little heat exposure will achieve the same. Moreover, spread your food or seeds finely on a baking sheet, preheat the oven to 120°F, and then leave it there for an hour. Should you be impatient, you can try 130°F for half an hour. If you’d like to use the microwave, spread the stuff on a plate or glass dish and run it for 5 minutes.
Remember that if you are heating seeds for gardening, the heat could damage the seed’s germination possibilities. Furthermore, never burn fine-grained stuff, such as flour, in the event of combustion.
More weevil elimination. Begin with cleaning the cabinets and kitchen regularly. Aside from that, if you spill something, clean it immediately and thoroughly. Perhaps it would help if you considered sealing any shelving cracks with caulk in the kitchen and cabinets to keep food from getting trapped in that area later. Similarly, purchase goods in smaller amounts instantly. Also, rotate your supply and do not mix fresh food with old. Thus, keep your perishables in tight-lidded plastic, glass, steel, and tin storage containers.
Bay leaves. Bay leaves are a natural weevil deterrent. Following freezing or heating your grains, put a bay leaf or two inside the storage container atop the food item you wish to protect. Indeed, you may as well randomly spread some leaves throughout the cabinet or kitchen.
Cloves. Cloves are also a natural deterrent for weevils. On the other hand, treat your grains using cloves precisely the same way you would using bay leaves. Soon after treating your food hot or cold, place a clove on top before storing it. Finally, spread a couple throughout the cabinets and kitchen as well.
With as prevalent a kitchen pest as weevils are, you would think that there could be many pesticides that mainly target them. Sad to say, this is not even close to the situation. The reason is simple: weevils stay and reproduce in your food. Since you wish to eat that food, contaminating it with insecticides probably isn’t the most effective idea.
Various pyrethrin aerosols and sprays are available indoors and in food handling locations. Also, you must still avoid spraying the food directly, when your kitchen and cabinets are empty, spray them down. For weevil elimination, consider using pyrethrins, such as those offered by Steam ‘n’ Dry Pest Control Auckland Service, which provides effective pest control in West Auckland, North Shore, Eastern Bays, South Auckland, and Hibiscus Coast.
